Players
Player characters are elite members of their cultures; fighters, healers, and ritualists well-suited to dealing with weak places and gaps in the walls between worlds. They will be joined in their camps by a small number of NPCs, who exist to deliver plot, provide information, and serve various mechanical functions.
We are not looking for crew.
Locations
The IC area is divided into three locations: the mortal camp, the Nightmare camp, and the Forest. The Forest is interposed between the two camps. All player characters must time in at their own camp, and travel between areas is controlled by IC mechanisms.
Entering the camp of the opposing side drains your character's strength. Your maximum global hits are reduced to 1, you may not use any special calls or abilities, may not cast rituals, and you may not use or gain the benefit of refreshes or healing.
No part of the IC area counts as a "safe field", and combat may occur in any location. However, the Forest is the area in which the vast majority of fighting between the two sides is expected to occur, given that it is full of desired magical resources.
Times
Pandemonium is planned to time in at 8.15pm on Friday, and time out at 1pm on Sunday. The game will be time in for the duration of this period. Combat and other kinds of PvP are legal throughout this time. However, between the hours of midnight and 10am, the refs will probably go to bed, no plot will be run, the Forest will be closed to players, and ritual magic can not be performed. The dining areas become OC spaces, and players and refs are expected to be quiet around sleeping spaces. Combat may still occur, and characters can be injured and killed. Theft may take place, but ONLY of items that are very obviously ref-provided game items, as refs will not be available to hand other stolen physreps over to.
The Forest is only accessible at certain times, depending on whether the gaps between realities are weak enough. These times will be well telegraphed before the event. They will not coincide with mealtimes. The Forest may be access through special portals, indicated OC via fairy lights. They will be switched on when entry to the Forest is possible, off when it is not.
If you are in the Forest when it closes the following rules apply:
- Once you become aware that this is the case, please make your way quickly to your own camp. Please do not pick up resources or engage in combat.
- You may exit the Forest on your own side, even if the portal is shut. You may not go back into the Forest until it reopens.
We will attempt to provide as much clarity as possible on when the Forest is closing, but recognise not everyone may be immediately aware, hence the above guidelines.
When the Forest is not accessible, NPCs are likely to visit camps, and plot and objectives will be delivered. Objectives will generally be a mix of goals achievable in the forest, and those achievable in camp through non-combat means.
Refs
Pandemonium has several field refs. Each of these has been trained to answer most rules queries and ref all kinds of rituals. In rare cases, it may be necessary for them to radio a query to the Head Ref.
The refs will play a number of NPC roles as required by plot. However, during the Forest phases, many of them will be playing Fae, the Forest's mysterious denizens. These are identified by the active fairy lights they will be wearing. If their lights are inactive, they are OC and not part of the game world. In either capacity, they are still refs and may still be called on for assistance with rules queries and such. Fae exist to fulfill a variety of game roles. They sometimes offer challenges or tests to players, and may either help or hinder their efforts to acquire resources and fight their enemies.
All Fae are non-combat roles and ignore damage and calls.
Resources
The Forest is rich with four kinds of magical resources: Crowngold, Heartsteel, Glowroot, and Mirrorfrost. For the Nightmares, however, the most important resource is mortal souls. Physreps for all of these will be decided soon and pictures posted below. Acquiring these resources is critical not only to empowering your side against your opponents, but also to completing plot objectives for your faction.
Resources gathered from the forest are in a "raw" form. They must be brought to a ref to be "harvested" into one or more resource tokens that can be used for game purposes.
Physreps
The ref team will provide phys-reps for souls, poultices, and magical resources. You do not need to bring your own.
Downtime
There is no formal downtime. There is no mechanical improvement between events. Characters may switch one skill for another skill between each event if they wish.
